Culloden, Clava Cairns & Cawdor in one day

A realistic, unhurried loop from the city — timings, parking, and the order that actually works.

By Al Coppin · Invernesspublished

These three sit within ten minutes of each other just east of Inverness, and most people do them in the wrong order — hitting Culloden at midday with every coach tour, then rushing the rest. This is the order that actually works: the battlefield early while it's quiet and cool, the cairns in the golden late-morning light, and Cawdor for the afternoon when its gardens are at their best.

You need a car, and the whole loop is an easy day with time for a proper lunch. Here's how I'd time it.

The plan, hour by hour

The loop

Culloden → Clava Cairns → Cawdor

About 25 miles round-trip from Inverness. Allow a full, unhurried day.

  1. 09:15

    DriveLeave Inverness

15 minutes east on the B9006. Aim to arrive before the coaches.

  2. 09:30

    Culloden Battlefield

Walk the moor first, before the visitor centre — it's the quiet, affecting part and it's free to roam. Give it 90 minutes.

  3. 11:15

    DriveDrive to Clava Cairns

Five minutes down the lane. Small free car park — it fills up, hence going now.

  4. 11:30

    Clava Cairns

4,000-year-old burial cairns in a beech grove. Genuinely atmospheric and rarely busy. 45 minutes is plenty.

  5. 12:30

FoodLunch in Croy or back toward Cawdor

Slim pickings out here — either pack something or hold on for the Cawdor Tavern.

  6. 13:30

    DriveDrive to Cawdor

    About 15 minutes.

  7. 14:00

    Cawdor Castle & Gardens

The gardens are the real draw — give them the afternoon. The castle interior is worth it if the weather turns.

  8. 16:30

    DriveBack to Inverness

20 minutes. Home in good time for dinner in town.
